“What comes in the box… is all it can do.”

That’s how James Aidoo from Innerscope explained a fixed mindset to our Year 7 students this morning — comparing it to the old Nokia 3310. Reliable, yes. But limited to exactly what it was designed to do.

Then he held up the alternative: the modern smartphone. Always updating. Downloading new apps. Adapting. Evolving.

It was a powerful way to spark a conversation about how we approach challenge, growth, and possibility.

James spoke passionately about something many educators recognise — young people often have undeniable talent, but sometimes their capability doesn’t yet translate into consistent results. Understanding the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset, he explained, is a key step in unlocking that potential.

Students were introduced to the “4 Ps” zones — Protester, Passenger, Participant, and Pioneer — not as labels, but as reflections on how we choose to show up. Each zone holds potential. Even the Protester zone carries leadership energy; the difference lies in how that energy is directed and applied.

One of the most memorable moments came when students were asked their favourite food. Among the usual favourites were many simple, heartfelt answers: “my mum’s cooking.”

It was a gentle reminder that behind many young people’s motivation is something deeply personal — a reason, a person, a “why.” And when we can connect to our why, we are able to show up fully and deliver well.

A huge thank you to James and the team at Innerscope for sharing their insights and passion, starting our Monday with such forward-thinking energy and inspiring our students.

Because sometimes the most powerful learning isn’t about having the answers — it’s about helping young people realise they have a choice in how they show up, and that growth is always within reach.
