Careers

We believe in fostering the skills and motivation that our students gain to be for life after Hampton High. We are committed to ensuring that all our students are well equipped by the time they leave us for the next steps in their life. Learning at Hampton High enables our young people to have not only excellent academic outcomes, but also to confidently take up their place in the wider world. We strive to raise students’ aspirations and promote awareness of a wide range of career pathways, helping them to make well-informed choices about their future.

Hampton Futures – Career Education and Guidance

It is important that all students are fully supported and guided through the process of planning their futures. The Careers Programme which is guided by our Careers Policy (which can be found in the Policy section of the School website) and aims to follow the government recommended Gatsby benchmarks.  For more information on this award and the Gatsby benchmarks see the links below.

Quality in Careers Careers and Enterprise With a programme of education, information, advice and guidance for all students from Years 7 -11 we believe our students are well prepared for their futures. Staff at Hampton High, play an active role in preparing them. We have a full programme of careers education that is delivered through PHSCE, special events, enrichment programmes, visits, trips, individual careers interviews, assemblies and also within individual departments and through form time.

All students will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their abilities and affinities
  • Gain a greater knowledge of the range of opportunities open to them
  • Take part in work related activities in and out of school
  • Understand the labour market and the requirements and expectations of employers
  • Learn to make decisions wisely about their future
  • Be fully prepared to manage change and be fully supported through key transition periods
  • Learn how to improve their own employability: how to find work, how to get work and how to progress their careers

A robust and inspiring CEIAG programme should be an integral part of the whole school and, as a result, Hampton’s CEIAG programme incorporates both formal careers education, information, advice and guidance activities, as well as other opportunities linked to each of the students’ subjects, whether this is delivered through/by bespoke lessons, external speakers, educational visits or developing our staff’s knowledge of the careers and opportunities linked to their subject areas. We believe that the whole school staff has a responsibility for the ‘careers education’ of its students and, therefore, it is important that all staff maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the opportunities that relate to their subjects, encourage students to explore ideas and are happy to provide additional information to students, or to refer them to other resources/colleagues with a more specific knowledge.

Year 7

Next Step – Students are supported in their transition from primary school into secondary school and begin to learn more about themselves.

Year 8

Exploring Work – Students explore the world of work gaining a greater understanding of employers expectations, employability skills and the labour market through the Careers Carousel.

Year 9

Students also have a weekly enrichment session on Digital Enterprise which covers a range of careers information such as financial literacy, interpersonal skills, digital literacy, and future planning. The aim of these sessions is to give students applicable and transferable skills which will be required in all career paths. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from, and gain advice from, the Support for Schools programme during assemblies and the GCSE options process.

Year 10

Students have a weekly careers session in their enrichment lessons which is designed to expose students to a wide range of careers across multiple industries. The aim of these sessions is to raise aspirations amongst students and encourage them to think more widely about the careers that are available to them. Students benefit from talking with their tutors and discussing as a class how they can make their career dreams a reality.

Year 11

Preparation for Progression – Students undergo a programme of education, information and guidance to help them make the vital decisions about their future.  A series of lessons in tutor time teaching them about effective decision making, explores their options and gives support in making their applications.  It covers the full range of routes into their future including sixth form, FE College, apprenticeships and school leaver programmes.  This is supported by 1:1 careers interviews and a Careers Carousel.

All students can meet with the Career Advisers for individual advice about options, future choices, CV clinic, interview preparation, apprenticeship applications, and any other guidance they need.  There is no restriction as to how many 1:1 guidance appointments they can have over their time in the school.  We also welcome parents to contact us for any advice or guidance they require.  The Future’s Team is always in attendance at Parents’ Evenings from Year 9-111, no appointment is necessary on those evenings.

Employer Encounters

All year groups will have an employer encounter once a year to understand from employers about their workplace and the skills required. This could be visiting speakers, careers fairs, networking events, trips to workplaces or mentoring.
