Performing Arts

The Hampton High Performing Arts curriculum aims to foster in our students a love of learning, giving them the confidence to be creative in a wide variety of settings and develop important life skills, transferable across the school curriculum and beyond.

Drama

Our Drama Curriculum aims to produce confident theatre makers who know how to create and understand theatre, using a range of practitioners’’ techniques so that they can communicate and interpret meaning.

Our focus for KS3 is on three practitioners: Brecht, Stanislavski and Frantic Assembly. Our spiral curriculum enables core knowledge of these practitioners to be revisited over the three years so that so that they can confidently use naturalistic and non-naturalistic forms to create theatre that is dynamic and engaging.

We believe that Drama should be largely practically with knowledge of theory demonstrated verbally and visually. This means we can spend time developing students' vocal and physical skills and, as such, we complete a practical warm up at the start of every lesson. We also address the issue of Performance Anxiety, in order to give students techniques to ground themselves and focus to be able to perform to the best of their ability, without their self-doubt creating a barrier to their success. This is a transferable skill as it will help them for public speaking, interview preparation as well as Mindfulness and being aware of their mental health.

We cater for all students: experienced performers, students with low self-esteem and students with Special Education Needs. We scaffold tasks and find ways to adapt the learning so that we can challenge every single student to think about how Drama can be a powerful tool to explore social and cultural complexities, giving students an opportunity to experience situations and learn about the world in a safe, respectful, and collaborative environment. We provide challenging and inclusive extracurricular opportunities from visiting practitioners, industry professionals to theatre trips, large scale Whole School musical productions and creating our own theatre companies to broaden the knowledge of our students and to understand how theatre is applicable to the world of work.

Music

Our high-quality music education aims to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement. We develop the students' understanding that music has the potential to make a significant contribution to children’s development: increasing confidence and self-esteem, developing leadership, team working, concentration and problem-solving skills, and developing identity and improving social cohesion within the school and wider community.

Our KS3 music curriculum has been designed to lay a foundation for GCSE Musicians so that students can excel in the three core areas and develop their long-term memory in order to excel in the appraisal part of the course. Students studying Music at Hampton High will develop the confidence to perform, compose and listen. They will also perform, listen to and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.

Students are given opportunity to learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, learn a musical instrument, and progress to the next level of musical excellence. Students will also be able to understand and explore how music is created, produced, and communicated, including through the musical elements: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, sonority, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Dance

Dance is for all; everybody, every ability and every gender. No boundaries, only possibilities.

All students should feel the confidence to dance and access the curriculum with agility, creativity and freedom of expression. Our curriculum teaches students the importance of being part of something larger than themselves and learn invaluable lessons for life. We acknowledge that Dance builds and develops creative thinking skills, social skills, discipline, commitment, and a great work ethic.

Students will grow in self-confidence and can develop as they overcome challenges to master new goals, learning to apply themselves and accomplish any task put before them. There are many opportunities to build a better understanding of spatial relationships and learn to think with both sides of their brain. All these skills enhance a child’s academic performance, as well as their physical well-being.
