Youth Primary Prom at the Royal Albert Hall, written by Tom Lavery in Year 7

On Wednesday 10 October I had a great opportunity to play my trombone with Hampton boys’ brass band for my first major concert. I woke up at 5:30am and was dragged out of bed by my mum so that I wasn’t late for the 6:15am departure from Hampton school. We were heading to the Music for Youth Primary Prom to perform our 2 pieces – The Home of Legends and Escape to the Galaxies. It was worth the early start, when we arrived at the Royal Albert Hall I was stunned by how huge the place was and how grand it looked.

We went in for a rehearsal which went well and then had to hang around for ages but before I knew it we were entering the stage for our first performance. The noise of the 4500 audience members clapping was deafening and I felt scared but excited. Thankfully everything went well and as we were the final act we got loads of applause.

After lunch we repeated the concert and this time I was less nervous and could enjoy it more. The second performance went just as well as the first and we were all very happy but a bit tired by the time we got back on the coach.

It had been an amazing experience and I felt lucky to have been able to take part.
