The European Day of Languages

This week has offered us the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the variety of languages and cultures in our school and to promote language learning at any stage of life. The survey conducted in tutor time has indicated that here at Hampton High we have fluent speakers of 41 other languages, in addition to English, of course. Studensts  have  also had the opportunity to discover the origin and the meanings of many phrases and words commonly used in the English language but  borrowed from other languages. Here are the answers to the mini language quiz from last week’s newsletter:

al fresco (Italian)   N.B. (nota bene)(Latin)     siesta (Spanish)     focus (Latin)       blitz (German)      connoisseur (French)

Finally, The Macmillan Coffee morning on Friday has given us  another opportunity to celebrate multiculturalism in our multilingual community.

Thank you to our wonderful Sixth Form students for putting on a fantastic selection of cakes. We will let you know how much they have raised for Macmillan next week.
